Aquatic macroinvertebrate diversity and composition in streams along an altitudinal gradient in Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Henriques-Oliveira,Ana Lucia; Nessimian,Jorge Luiz.
Aquatic macroinvertebrate diversity and composition in streams along an altitudinal gradient in Southeastern Brazil. A study concerning taxonomic richness and composition of the aquatic insect fauna in streams within the same catchment basin along an altitudinal gradient in Southeast Brazil, was conducted to test the hypothesis that there is a faunal discontinuity in the biocenotic composition, related to differences in altitude and latitude. In Southeastern Brazil, around latitude 22°, this faunal transition from rhithron to potamon biocenosis should occur at 500 m above sea level. Eighteen tributaries of the Mambucaba River, at Serra da Bocaina National Park, SP-RJ, Brazil, were studied. The streams were separated into 6 altitudinal zones (zone 1: above...

Benthic macroinvertebrate communities in sites with native forest presence and absence in north Patagonia Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ríos-Escalante,Patricio De los; Esse,Carlos; Santander-Massa,Rodrigo; Saavedra,Pablo; Encina-Montoya,Francisco.
ABSTRACT The benthic fauna in northern Patagonian streams is characterized by presence of water quality indicator species. The aim of the present study was characterized the benthic communities in streams associated to sites with presence of Nothofagus forests and with human intervention without Nothofagus forests using null models in ecology, unified neutral theory of biodiversity (UNTB) and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). The results of species co-occurrence null model revealed that species associations are random, whereas the results of niche overlap null models revealed the presence of niche overlap. The UNTB results revealed low species number. The results of UPGMA revealed that species composition is specific for each site...

Community structure of aquatic insects (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera) in Cerrado streams of Paraguay, Paraná, and São Francisco river basins Biota Neotropica
Romero,Renato de Mei; Ceneviva-Bastos,Mônica; Baviera,Gustavo Henrique; Casatti,Lilian.
We evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively the community structure of aquatic insects (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera) in 19 streams in areas of Cerrado in the Paraguay, Paraná, and São Francisco river basins. The number of genera and taxonomic composition were compared at spatial (at the hydrographic basins level) and conservation levels (more preserved and less preserved areas). The influence of spatial and environmental factors in richness and abundance was also evaluated. The geographical distribution of Grumicha, Coryphorus, and Austrotinodes was expanded. The highest Trichoptera richness was found in the São Francisco river basin (F = 5,602, p = 0,004) and a higher number of Ephemeroptera genera occurred in the relatively less...

Diversity and abundance of the benthic macrofauna in lotic environments from the central region of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Ayres-Peres,Luciane; Sokolowicz,Carolina C.; Santos,Sandro.
The benthic fauna plays an important role in the trophic web and the nutrient flow of limnetic environments. This work aimed to study the diversity and abundance of the benthic invertebrates in four watercourses in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Sampling was done seasonally at each site, with a long-handled net at the margins (banks) and streambed, from November 2001 through September 2002. Margalef richness, Shannon diversity and Pielou evenness indices were applied to the data analysis. A total of 58 families and three other major taxa (Hirudinea, Oligochaeta and Copepoda) of invertebrates were identified. The highest values of diversity and abundance were recorded at the margins of the rivers, in the same pattern found in...

Habitat diversity and benthic functional trophic groups at Serra do Cipó, Southeast Brazil BJB
CALLISTO,M.; MORENO,P.; BARBOSA,F. A. R..
The assessment of the diversity of habitats and the characterisation of the functional trophic groups of benthic macroinvertebrate communities of some rivers of Serra do Cipó (MG) were the main objectives of this study. The available trophic resources and the types of substrata were characterised along with the structure and composition of their using functional trophic groups. Serra do Cipó is a watershed divisor of the São Francisco and Doce River basins, including a series of streams and rivers, of good water quality and well preserved ecological characteristics. Samples were collected in Cipó, Peixe and Preto do Itambé rivers, besides the Indaiá and Capão da Mata streams at 26 sampling stations, during the rainy (February) and dry (October) seasons of...

Individual-based simulation of the spatial and temporal dynamics of macroinvertebrate functional groups provides insights into benthic community assembly mechanisms ArchiMer
Alexandridis, Nikolaos; Bacher, Cedric; Desroy, Nicolas; Jean, Fred.
The complexity and scales of the processes that shape communities of marine benthic macroinvertebrates has limited our understanding of their assembly mechanisms and the potential to make projections of their spatial and temporal dynamics. Individual-based models can shed light on community assembly mechanisms, by allowing observed spatiotemporal patterns to emerge from first principles about the modeled organisms. Previous work in the Rance estuary (Brittany, France) revealed the principal functional components of its benthic macroinvertebrate communities and derived a set of functional relationships between them. These elements were combined here for the development of a dynamic and spatially explicit model that operates at two spatial scales. At the...

Influence of bauxite tailings on the structure of the benthic macroinvertebrate community in an Amazonian Lake (Lago Batata, Pará - Brazil) BJB
FONSECA,J. J. L.; ESTEVES,F. de A..
This research was developed between 1993 and 1996, aiming to study the structure of the benthic macroinvertebrate community, relating it to some abiotic variables, in an amazonian lake (lago Batata), that received for ten years a great amount of bauxite tailings. The benthic macroinvertebrates were collected with a core and the abiotic variables that were measured were: dissolved oxygen, suspended material, depth, transparency (secchi disc), temperature of the water column and total nitrogen, available phosphorus and organic matter in the sediment. With the use of a Principal Components Analysis (PCA), we were able to show that the sampling sites differed regarding the abiotic variables, especially total-N, available-P and organic matter in the sediment,...

Qualitative modelling of functional relationships in marine benthic communities ArchiMer
Alexandridis, Nikolaos; Dambacher, Jeffrey M.; Jean, Fred; Desroy, Nicolas; Bacher, Cedric.
In order to better understand and predict the dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrate communities, we need to first define the functional components of benthic biodiversity and then provide a mechanistic description of how they interact with their abiotic environment, their basic resources and each other. These interactions should be largely controlled by readily available biological traits, making trait-based modelling an ideal framework for the synthesis of relevant hypotheses from ecological theory and expert knowledge. With the help of benthic species traits, we derived a set of first principles regarding the role of organisms in processes of environmental filtering, consumption of algae/detritus, predation, use of space, biogenic habitat modification...

Trichoptera Kirby (Insecta) immature fauna from Rio das Almas Basin and Rio Paranã, Goiás State, Brazil, with new records for some genera Biota Neotropica
Barbosa,Felipe Francisco; Godoy,Bruno Spacek; Oliveira,Leandro Gonçalves.
This paper deals with the Trichoptera immature fauna collected in 101 streams in Rio das Almas Basin during August-October 2008 and in Rio Paranã, Iaciara-GO municipality, on August 2003, using kick-nets with 0.025 m² of opening and 2 mm mesh. We record four new genera for Goiás State, expanding records of genera from 33 to 37 and contributing to the Trichoptera fauna knowledge in Central Brazil.
